The Weatherings issue of Agenda, vol 55 nos 1-2, has several special features. There are elegies for three great poets who died regrettably towards the end of last year: Grey Gowrie, Thomas Kinsella and Brendan Kennelly, all of whom will be much missed, even though their voices will live on.
There are in-depth interviews with two multiple award-winnng poets: David Harsent, and James Harpur. In keeping with the Agenda tradition to give space to the long poem, here long poems or sequences are interspersed with more compact poems so the reader can dip in and out of whatever poem they fancy. Poets include known and lesser known voices such as John F Deane, Peter Dale, Jane Lovell, Jeremy Hooker, David Cooke, Gerard Smyth, Peter Carpenter, Greg Delanty, Mary O’Donnell among others; translations of Paul Éluard, Marina Tsvetaeva and Rilke by Timothy Adès, Belinda Cooke and Will Stone respectively, with a chosen young poet, Betty Doyle.
There is a variety of stimulating reviews, and a special treat in the Notes for Broadsheet Poets series, with edited sections of C Day Lewis’s essay ‘Making a Poem’, presented by Professor Albert Gelpi, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the death of this somewhat undeservedly neglected poet.

The following reviews accompany the Weatherings issue of Agenda
Editor’s note: For the essays/reviews, special features and translations some wonderful Ukranian artists have been showcased since the suffering in Ukraine must be in the backs of everyone’s mind and the soul of these people is honoured in paint. The paintings were chosen by Ursula O’Reilly Traynor, widow of Shaun, a dear friend and fine poet .

Tread Softly… draws together not just the Irish and English, but also groups within these two general groups such as Irish poets brought up in Ireland but who come to reside in the UK, poets brought up here but whose parents were migrants of one sort or another. And then, of course, there is the great band of Northern Irish poets who are differently Irish in the UK, since Northern Ireland remains part of the UK. Here there are two splinter groups: poets (such as Heaney, Montague) brought up in the Catholic religion, and those linked to the Protestant ascendancy such as Derek Mahon, and Michael Longley English by birth but brought up and a long-time resident in the North of Ireland – all of whom, of course, transcend the limits of their tribe.

This ‘Altered Distances’ issue brought out in the ‘new normal’ aims to avoid clichés and anything that might be interpreted as ’the hazards of trying to surf the wave of the now’ (Michael Laponte, TLS Oct 2, 2020).
The voices in these pages come from many different angles, rise above the mundane, and testify to the power of poetry, not only to console and comfort, but also to celebrate man’s spirit, and nature’s unfailing cycles of renewal.

Introduction taken from the Pound Reconsidered issue.
It was an honour for this special ‘Pound Reconsidered’ issue to present itself almost by magic via the wand of Professor David Moody whose contributions make up the backbone of these pages. It is very special that Agenda is publishing for the first time Pound’s early long poem ‘The Dawn’. It is a prose and verse sequence put together by Pound in London in 1909, never published, and thought lost. David Moody’s essay on The Muncie Papers also contains new material regarding the question of Pound’s sanity or insanity. As he says:
Dr Wendell Muncie was the psychiatrist appointed by Ezra Pound’s counsel to advise on his mental condition in 1945 at the time of his trial for treason. His papers relating to the examination of Pound were given to me earlier this year by his son, together with permission to publish. The papers, previously unseen by any of us who had written on the case, contain new information which throws into relief the conduct of the Justice Department, as well as that of Pound’s counsel, Julian Cornell, and of the psychiatrists, and calls for a revised account of the episode. It has been generally believed that the government was prevented from bringing Pound to trial by the plea of insanity and the psychiatrists’ collusion, but now it becomes clear that the government was in fact complicit in avoiding a trial. The other point of interest is that Muncie’s extensive notes reveal what was actually said by Pound to the psychiatrists examining him.
The essay does not touch on Pound as a poet. The new material came to me out of the blue after vol. 3 of my biography was out.
As many of you know, though some don’t, Agenda was actually founded by a young William Cookson – who was then at New College, Oxford – at the instigation of Ezra Pound. William’s Guide to the Cantos of Ezra Pound is illuminating and profoundly researched and very well worth delving into for readers who want an in-depth appreciation of the Cantos. In his essay ‘The Esemplastic Power’ in Agenda’s Special Issue in Honour of Ezra Pound’s Eighty-fifth Birthday (Vol 8, Nos 3-4, 1970), Hugh MacDiarmid strongly refutes the ‘widely entertained idea that Pound’s Cantos are a set of rag-bags filled with miscellaneous stuff insusceptible of any coherence or significance’. ‘On the contrary’, he claims, ‘it is obvious that we have here a great poet tirelessly intent on organising a tremendous wealth of material into indispensable elements of an epic poetic enterprise’. An epic work it certainly is in which the poet creates a whole unified cosmos, one that coheres brilliantly and can be studied forever with humility, yet at the same time so many of the poems can be appreciated for themselves, without notes, with delight for their own moving music, lyric beauty and spontaneous meaning. It is worth dipping into them, even casually, to find your own gems.
William did say to me, when I first knew him and he and Peter Dale, Associate Editor, had adopted my poetry which I sent them from Asia where I lived for a few years, that it was the biggest disappointment of his life that I had not read the whole of the Cantos. Maybe now is the time for this challenging long read.
Agenda, in William’s day, published I think three special Pound issues. I have two to my hand today, the one referred to above, and the Twenty-First Anniversary Ezra Pound Special Issue (Vol 17 Nos 3-4 – Vol 18 No 1). On one page I find John Heath-Stubbs’ appraisal:
Pound simply cannot be dismissed. He astonishes us and haunts us again
and again by the beauty and clarity of an image, by the melody of a phrase.
Anyone aspiring to the composition of verse should read and re-read him… What is to be learnt from Pound, for whom… his true Penelope was Flaubert, is, above all things, style.

This Anglo/French issue, in which the focus is on mainly living French-speaking poets – with a few exceptions – surely demonstrates how the arts, such as paintings, sculptures, architecture, music, plus fiction and poetry have no boundaries, having been shared and swapped for centuries between cultures and countries.
Some might not be aware of Agenda’s long tradition of publishing and promoting important poets from all over the world. Regarding French poetry, Agenda brought out a French Poetry Issue, vol 15 No 4 in winter 1997/8 in which, as stated in the editorial, and like in this issue, the poems ‘range from ‘after’, through imitation, version, to full-blooded representation’ in order to produce good poems in English. Keith Bosley, Peter Dale, C H Sisson, Geoffrey Hill and Clare Sheppard were some of the translators involved.
The English or ‘Anglo’ sections in this issue contain the usual uplifting variety of poems, by well established, lesser known and new poets, some of them inspired by France.
Many thanks to all contributors, readers, subscribers, and to those whose advice and input have helped strengthen this issue.

Ekphrasis, from the Greek, traditionally referred to a vivid, often dramatic, verbal description of a work of art. However, modern poets have mostly broadened the term and try to interpret, inhabit, confront and speak to their subjects. This issue of Agenda sees ekphrastic poetry as one art form being inspired by another, whether it be painting, sculpture, photography, film or music.

This special 1918 issue seeks to commemorate and honour all those who fought in WW1 and all those who suffered from their grievous losses. It does not seek, through the poems included, to replicate in any way the grave poems, now also historical documents, written by the soldiers in WW1, most of whom sacrificed their lives. They have a very special place in our hearts and in the national archive. It does, however, seek to demonstrate how, deep in our psyches, that supposed ‘war to end all wars’ lives on today, and becomes transmuted differently, yet importantly.

Geoffrey Hill has long been associated with Agenda and highlighted as being the most formidable, challenging, important English poet of our day, or indeed any day. It is humbly hoped that the tributes in this issue, whether elegies or pieces of prose, the powerful portrait painting, and the images in black and white – all by Keith Grant – and indeed the poems in general written before Geoffrey‘s death form a respectful wreath for his fierce and dear shade.
Christopher Ricks called him long ago ‘a poet at once urgent and timeless’.
Peter Levi summed him up as ‘ the great cellist of contemporary poets’.
